Challenges in STEM Learning in Elementary Schools based on Social Science Literacy

Abstract

Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based learning has a significant influence in building social skill of the society during this century. One of the component which support the success of this STEM based learning is the literary skill of the students in social aspect. This research aims to reveal the profile of capability of social literacy skill which support the success of STEM. The method used is participatory qualitative in which the participants are 6th grade elementary school students with the total of 40. The instruments used are a list of social literacy and triangulacy knowledge and by using interview technique. The result of this research shows that: (1) social literacy skill that support STEM vary according to gender and grade point average of social studies in previous class, (2) most of the students still has a low STEM literacy skill, and (3) STEM literacy skill of the students comes from textbooks, social medias, and informations they receive from adults. This research concluded that social literacy skill and STEM of the students in elementary school in Bandung area considered as low.
